The Darryl Howard Foundation is a registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps formerly incarcerated individuals reintegrate into society. Formally established as an independent non-profit organization in May 2018; the mission of the foundation is to meet the immediate needs of ex-offenders of Durham, NC. through brotherhood and the fostering of long-term support and change through community involvement. DHF is grounded in the belief that with the proper assistance, ex-offenders returning to the community can overcome the many barriers to successful re-entry that the formally incarcerated experience.
Understanding founder Darryl Howard’s background will explain the strategy and need for DHF. Mr. Howard was wrongfully convicted and spent 24 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. After his exoneration in 2016; he had to adapt and build a new life outside of the institution; re-establish relationships with family; reconnect with loved ones and face the challenges of exoneration with purpose and new found freedom.
It is because of these strong personal reasons and the myriad of emotions he endured for 24 years, the DHF was established. The foundation is able to address many of the challenges at a critical period of re-entry and mitigate common problems; allowing the ex-offender to concentrate on adjusting to life on the outside. The DHF offers the right mix of services and support to stabilize ex-offenders and properly prepare them for the realities of re-entry into society.
